What is CBG and What are its Benefits?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, and it's one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that act on cannabinoid receptors in cells. These receptors are part of endocannabinoid system, which helps maintain homeostasis within the body's central nervous system and immune system (among other things). The most well-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). CBG belongs to a class called terpenes, or aromatic compounds made up of chains of carbon molecules.

Anti-inflammatory

CBD is known to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, many people use CBD for this reason alone.

CBD and other cannabinoids, like CBG also have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with a number of diseases that are related to inflammation. Inflammation is an immune response that occurs when your body detects a harmful substance or irritant and sends white blood cells to the area where it has been detected. This process causes swelling, redness, pain and other symptoms associated with inflammation in general.

The most common form of chronic inflammation is arthritis - an autoimmune disease affecting over five million Americans according to the Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org). Arthritis causes painful joints due to cartilage damage causing swelling around the joint or joints involved; over time this can lead to tissue breakdown resulting in permanent joint damage or disability if not treated properly through medication or surgery depending on severity level experienced by patient being diagnosed with potential signs shown below:

  • Swelling (around individual joints) * Heat/redness spreading up arm/leg * Painful movements when trying move around comfortably without feeling sore afterwards

Neuroprotective

The first benefit is CBG’s ability to protect the nervous system. Studies show that CBG has neuroprotective properties and can slow the progression of diseases such as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease (1).

This means that CBG can prevent damage to the nervous system and start healing any damage that has already been done. This makes it useful for treating a variety of neurological conditions, including epilepsy (2) and multiple sclerosis (3).

Antibacterial

CBG is a natural compound that has antibacterial properties. When consumed, it can help to fight off harmful bacteria in the body without harming healthy cells.

Why does CBG have antibacterial effects?

CBG works to fight off bacteria because it is made up of two molecules: monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. These molecules are similar to those found in other essential oils, such as eucalyptus and tea tree oil. The main difference between these types of oils is that CBG has a lower concentration of these molecules than other essential oils do—so it doesn't have as strong of an aroma or flavor profile!

Bone growth and healing fractures

Some of the benefits of CBG include the fact that it can help with bone growth. In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers found that CBG increased bone mass and strength in mice. The researchers also found that CBG was more effective at healing fractures than CBD because it binds to different receptors in vertebrates and animals than CBD does. This means that while both cannabinoids may have similar effects on humans and other mammals, they have different mechanisms of action when interacting with our bodies' cells.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma

The most serious health benefit of CBG is its potential for reducing eye pressure, which can cause blindness and neuropathic pain in patients. In addition to this, it's also neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory.

Huntington's disease

Huntington's disease is an inherited disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. This leads to muscle coordination problems, difficulty with thinking and memory, mood swings, and depression.

The condition is caused by a defective gene called Huntingtin. It is passed from parent to child through DNA. Most people who carry this gene do not have any symptoms until their 40s or 50s and then develop symptoms over time.

CBD may help delay the onset of Huntington's disease according to one study but more research is needed on this topic at this time.

Inflammatory bowel disease

You may have heard of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a condition that affects the lining of your digestive tract and can cause symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bleeding. In recent years, researchers have been exploring the therapeutic potential of CBG for conditions like IBD. Studies show that CBD can help with inflammation in the gut by reducing intestinal permeability and decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines (messenger proteins). It’s also been shown to be effective when treating bacterial infections.

CBG has a lot of medical benefits, but it is still understudied.
